Class A Compactable Fill:
In Construction Clean fill materials play a crucial role in providing support and stability to foundations.
Below are various methods used to gain a stable base for construction.
- Fill Clean Fill:
- Description: Class A Fill encompasses various types of earth, including subsoil, gravel, sand, and clay. These materials serve as a compactable combination to create stable foundations, level terrain, and fill holes at construction projects.
- Application:
- For building foundations, clean earth with high clay content is often used.
- Golf courses may require nutrient-rich topsoil for leveling.
- Rock Fill:
- Description: Rock fill consists of large to medium rocks obtained from crushing . It’s used to fill larger holes or even out terrain.
- Landscaping Consideration: When using rock fill, a layer of topsoil is added for landscaping. This topsoil may need amendments like mulch or compost.
- Fill Sand:
- Description: Fill sand comes in various forms, with individual grains that can be sharp or rounded. Unlike dirt, sand doesn’t compress or absorb water significantly.
Types of Compaction methods are outlined in the following below.
- Static Compaction:
- In static compaction, a large stress is slowly applied to the soil and then released. It relies on the deadweight of the machine to compress the soil particles downward. However, static compaction is limited to upper soil layers and is not effective for deeper depths1.
- Impact Compaction:
- Impact compaction involves dropping a large mass (such as a heavy plate or hammer) onto the soil surface. The impact force compacts the soil particles. It’s commonly used for backfilling trenches and compacting loose soil2.
- Vibratory Compaction:
- Vibratory compaction uses a mechanically driven plate or hammer to apply repeated and rapid stress to the soil. The vibrating mechanism sets soil particles in motion, moving them closer together. This method achieves high density by overcoming the cohesive nature of certain particles1.
Remember that the choice of compaction method depends on the specific project, soil type, and depth requirements. On site testing will play a big part in determining the end results.

For building and demolition contractors landfill space is scarce, especially in urban areas. The demolition waste fees rise as construction waste increases and the number of accessible landfills sites decreases.
